On April 25th, SEVENTEEN released a teaser of their upcoming music video, “Maestro,” which surprised fans with a dark change in their artistic direction. The teaser appeared to be a commentary on the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in artistic spaces. The disclaimer included in the teaser confirmed that a portion of the video was created using AI.
While fans have praised the intended message of the music video, some have criticized its use of AI. The criticism stems from the fact that the video partially contains AI-generated footage, which defeats the purpose of the critique. AI models use the data fed to their algorithm by the user to increase the accuracy of the output, and any usage only contributes to making an AI program more powerful and less distinguishable from human-made results.
While some fans argue that the usage of AI was inevitable to portray how the algorithm cannot create something human-like, others believe that HYBE, the parent company of SEVENTEEN, has the budget to take alternative routes to replicate AI-like visuals, including hiring VFX artists. The fact that they chose the easy cop-out felt like a dilution of SEVENTEEN's message to them.
Some fans are on the fence about this issue and suggest reserving criticism until the full music video is released. This will give audiences an idea of how much AI-produced content is used and how the message plays out.
