The Drums has essentially become the solo project of Jonny Pierce over the past few years. His sixth studio album, Jonny, an indie pop album, is set to arrive via ANTI- on October 13th.
Jonny Pierce has been very personal in his new album, Jonny, confronting his “cult-like” religious upbringing, and how it still affects him through adulthood. The album is a reflection of his soul, with a mix of emotions including devastation, triumph, confusion, certainty, wisdom, and foolishness. The album is also filled with a sense of optimism and gratitude, as Pierce has been able to make peace with his traumatic childhood.
In a press release, Pierce explained, “To encapsulate ones’ whole self in an album, to honor each and every part of you — even the parts that feel at odds with each other, is to make something deeply human, and because my religion is humanism, the album becomes a sacred place for me to worship. Each feeling a different pew, each song a hymn to the human heart.”
The Drums’ North American tour kicks off tonight in San Diego. Tickets are available at StubHub. The band’s last album was Brutalism, which was released in 2019.
The Drums is an indie pop band from New York City, USA. The band was originally formed by Jonathan Pierce and Jacob Graham, under the name of Goat Explosion. Later, Adam Kessler and Connor Hanwick joined the band. However, in 2016, Graham left the band and since then, Jonathan Pierce has been the sole remaining member. Therefore, The Drums is now operating as a solo project of Pierce.
