Mitski, an American singer-songwriter, released her seventh studio album named “The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We” on September 15, 2023, under the Dead Oceans label.

The album was produced by Patrick Hyland and recorded at the Bomb Shelter studio in Nashville as well as Sunset Sound in Los Angeles.

Mitski's latest album title was inspired by a joke she came up with during the pandemic. She pictured seeing a welcome sign on the road while crossing state lines. However, instead of the usual slogans, such as “The Land of 10,000 Lakes” or “The Constitution State,” the sign read “The Land Is Inhospitable And So Are We.”

Despite being a joke, it had a kernel of truth. Mitski mentioned in an interview with NPR's Morning Edition that it felt inhospitable in the United States at the moment.

Mitski has a significant following among fans and fellow musicians. Iggy Pop once told BBC 6 that she was “the most advanced American songwriter I know.”

Her lyrics have a literary quality. Although she hasn't lived the stories in her songs, her characters offer emotional truths. Her songs feature a problem drinker who sees a bug at the bottom of a glass, a lover who bends “like a willow” around their beloved, and a narrator who finds frost in an attic and remembers a late best friend.

Mitski describes The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, which was released last Friday, as her most American album. She discussed the new project with Morning Edition.
