Marie Ulven, the Norwegian pop singer known as Girl In Red, is gearing up for the release of her new album titled “I'm Doing It Again Baby!”. Last month, she shared a single titled “Too Much,” and last week, she released the title track.
This second album is much anticipated and it chronicles the artist's last two and a half years with honesty and humor, showcasing her willingness to experiment with her music. With “I'm Doing It Again Baby!”, Girl In Red is showcasing her more ambitious, exciting, and idea-driven music. The album explores themes such as confidence, criticism, self-esteem, and vulnerability, and was produced in collaboration with Matias Tellez.
Girl In Red has come a long way since its inception. Her hits “we fell in love in october” and “i wanna be your girlfriend” were released when she was just a teenager, and they were poignant ballads with memorable melodies. Marie Ulven Ringheim is a Norwegian singer-songwriter and record producer, famous for her indie pop project Girl in Red. She was born on February 16, 1999, and gained recognition for her bedroom-produced EPs, Chapter 1 (2018) and Chapter 2 (2019), which feature songs about love and mental health. Her debut studio album, If I Could Make It Go Quiet (2021), released through AWAL, was a critical and commercial triumph, earning her three Norwegian Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year. Her first major-label album, I'm Doing It Again Baby!, is set to come out on April 12, 2024.
Girl in Red has been recognized as a queer icon by Paper and “one of the most astute and exciting singer-songwriters in the world of guitar music” by The New York Times. In January 2021, her singles “I Wanna Be Your Girlfriend” (2017) and “We Fell in Love in October” (2018) were certified gold in the US. She won the Telenor Culture Prize in 2022 for her “artistic distinctiveness and explicit messages of boundless love.”
Marie Ulven Ringheim was born in Horten, Norway, on February 16, 1999. She grew up with her sisters and divorced parents, describing Horten as “quiet and kinda boring” in an interview with Triple J in October 2019. Her mother worked with technology and her father was a policeman. Although her grandfather could play the guitar and piano, Ulven grew up without instruments in the home. She was curious about becoming a teacher in high school before discovering the guitar and songwriting at the age of 14. Her grandfather gifted her a guitar for Christmas in 2012, but she only started playing it in 2013 after losing interest in fingerboarding. Ulven taught herself piano, guitar, and music production from her bedroom. She began by writing and releasing Norwegian music and had planned to study music, but never concluded that she was going to become a musician.
