Simon grew up in Downtown Manhattan and is the son of the late Sidney Simon, a well-known sculptor in New York City, and Renee Adriance, a social worker. He has one brother and five half-siblings. Simon developed a love for hip-hop at a young age and was drawn to both the lyrical and musical aspects of the genre.

He started making music as a teenager with his friends in the Overground group. However, after meeting Aesop Rock at Boston University, where he was studying to become a rapper, Simon decided to focus on producing music instead. According to him, his stage name comes from the shape of his head, which he describes as “pretty close” to being square.
